In the begining...

Between watching movies, and going places, I'll be making a knife this summer. Here I will document the entire process. I started last summer with trying to make a sword with no more than a piece of steel and an angle grinder. Having little experience with this, I got the basic shape cut out and nothing more. No bevel on the edges to speak of. So I have decided to take my time with this, plan it out, and make it good. The steps I will be taking is to draw it out, obtain the materials, cut the blank, bevel it, heat treat it, then make the handle and attatch it.

Making the blank
Monday, June 9 through Tuesday, June 10, 2008
First I started by drawing the knife to scale on graph paper 1. Then I cut it out after I got it how I liked it, and transfered it to the steel 2. After that, I cut it out using a hacksaw and angle grinder 3 & 4. Then I got out my files, and got the imperfections out of it 5. When I finally got it like I wanted it, I started on beveling the blade. That's putting the slope on the blade down to the point. I wanted a flat bevel, but it ended up being curved, and it doesn't look too bad, so I think I'll keep it as is (6).
